Insiders were net buyers of Gannett Co., Inc.'s (NYSE:GCI ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders bought more stock than they sold.

s(紐約證券交易所代碼:GCI)在過去一年的股票。

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Gannett

The Independent Director Laurence Tarica made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$225k worth of shares at a price of US$4.50 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$5.38), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Gannett is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find small cap companies at attractive valuations, this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.

Insider Ownership Of Gannett

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 5.3% of Gannett shares, worth about US$40m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Gannett Insider Transactions Indicate?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Insiders likely see value in Gannett shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company). So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with Gannett and understanding it should be part of your investment process.

But note: Gannett may not be the best stock to buy. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with high ROE and low debt.
