Stock god Buffett recently announced that it will donate approximately 1.14 billion US dollars of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A.US, BRK.B.US) shares to four family foundations

The Zhitong Finance App learned that stock god Buffett recently announced that it will donate approximately 1.14 billion US dollars of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A.US, BRK.B.US) shares to four family foundations. This is part of the philanthropic promise the billionaire made almost 20 years ago.

According to a statement issued in Omaha, Nebraska, where Berkshire is headquartered, the 94-year-old investor will convert 1,600 Berkshire Class A shares into 2.4 million Class B shares. Subsequently, he will donate 1.5 million shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation), named after his late wife, and 0.3 million shares each to the three foundations managed by his children — the Sherwood Foundation (Sherwood Foundation), Howard G. Buffett Foundation (Howard G. Buffett Foundation), and the Novo Foundation.

Back in 2010, Buffett, along with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, launched the “Giving Pledge” (Giving Pledge), promising to donate all of his wealth during his lifetime or after death. Earlier, in 2006, he began making large donations to the Gates Foundation and foundations related to his children.

In June of this year, Buffett announced that after his death, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would no longer receive donations from him. At that time, his two sons and daughter will be responsible for managing a new charitable trust. At the same time, he promised to donate 13 million Berkshire Class B shares to four family foundations and the Gates Foundation.

In a letter to shareholders, Buffett said, “In our early years, Susan and I encouraged our children to participate in small-scale charitable activities and were pleased with their enthusiasm, hard work, and results. However, at the time of Susan's death, they weren't ready to manage the huge wealth brought by Berkshire shares. But then, my lifelong commitment to donate in 2006 and subsequent expansion gave a huge boost to their charitable activities.”

Following this donation, Buffett's holdings of Berkshire Class A shares were reduced to 206,363 shares, a decrease of nearly 57% since the 2006 commitment. Buffett's current net worth is $150.2 billion, making him the seventh-richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
