32% Of This MetLife Insider's Holdings Were Sold
Looking at MetLife, Inc.'s (NYSE:MET ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
MetLife Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP and Head of Global Technology & Operations, Bill Pappas, sold US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$72.27 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$87.34, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 32% of Bill Pappas's stake. Bill Pappas was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that MetLife insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about US$139m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
