Deutsche Telekom expands cooperation with nokia oyj on open networks.
According to the Zhito Finance APP, the Finnish network equipment supplier nokia oyj (NOK.US) announced on Wednesday that Deutsche Telekom AG, one of the largest telecommunications operators in europe, has chosen the company to deploy over 3,000 open network sites in northern germany.
It is understood that this large-scale network trade is a significant commercial deployment of OpenRAN open technology. OpenRAN technology allows telecommunications operators to select components from different equipment suppliers without having to purchase a complete set from a single supplier. According to the joint cooperation statement, nokia oyj's technology will connect with the wireless communications equipment of Fujitsu, a information and communications technology company in japan.
OpenRAN, or open radio access network, is a type of wireless communication network architecture whose core goal is to achieve flexibility, interoperability, and supplier neutrality of radio access network (RAN) functions through open interfaces and modular designs. Its primary application scenarios are in the access layer of mobile networks (such as 5G base stations) and edge network deployments. OpenRAN utilizes open interfaces (such as O-RAN Fronthaul interfaces) to enable data interaction between different modules, ensuring that hardware and software from different suppliers can interoperate.
This large german telecommunications operator had previously cooperated with nokia oyj and Fujitsu to deploy OpenRAN test network sites in the country. As the scale of their cooperation continues to expand, nokia oyj will use its OpenRAN-compliant technology to replace the existing network technology supplier.
This trade occurred after nokia oyj lost a high-stakes competition worth up to 14 billion dollars, aimed at introducing OpenRAN for one of the largest telecommunications operators in the usa, with the successful competitor being the swedish telecom giant lm ericsson telephone. This competitive failure is a significant blow for the Finnish operator, especially since it had previously embraced OpenRAN.
Tommi Uitto, president of nokia oyj's mobile networks business, stated in a statement: "While other companies talk about launching large-scale OpenRAN projects, nokia oyj is actually implementing the project on a large scale. This is a significant deal for nokia oyj, as we have been chosen by europe's largest network operator to expand our cooperation."
