Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday shared by the US and Canada, but the days are not the same. Thanksgiving Day was originally established to thank God for good harvests or good luck. In the US, Thanksgiving Day has been on the fourth Thursday of November every year since 1941. Similar to the Chinese Spring Festival, many Americans have to find ways to reunite with their families on this day no matter how busy they are. Canadian Thanksgiving Day began in 1879 and is on the second Monday of October every year, the same as Columbus Day in the US.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is called “Black Friday,” and it also forms a small tradition for US stocks to close 3 hours early on this day. This day is generally regarded as marking the official beginning of the peak shopping season at the end of the year. It is a barometer of the retail industry's most important Christmas sales season performance every year. It is also one of the most valued and busiest days of the year for merchants.
