Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry's (SZSE:300641) Five-year Total Shareholder Returns Outpace the Underlying Earnings Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 28 19:19

It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300641) share price down 19% in the last month. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In that time, the share price has soared some 356% higher! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry managed to grow its earnings per share at 90% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 35% over the same period. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry, it has a TSR of 375% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 299% over one year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 37% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
