Chengdu Yunda Technology (SZSE:300440) Investors Are up 18% in the Past Week, but Earnings Have Declined Over the Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 30 09:19

If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But Chengdu Yunda Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300440) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 12% over five years, which is below the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 11%.

Since the stock has added CN¥563m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Chengdu Yunda Technology's earnings per share are down 1.4% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

With EPS falling, but a modestly increasing share price, it seems that the market was probably too pessimistic about the stock in the past. In the long term, though, it will be hard for the share price rises to continue without improving EPS.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Chengdu Yunda Technology, it has a TSR of 15% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Chengdu Yunda Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 12% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 3%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Chengdu Yunda Technology has 3 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
