There's No Escaping FibroGen, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FGEN) Muted Revenues Despite A 34% Share Price Rise

FibroGen, Inc.(ナスダック:FGEN)の控えめな収益は、34%のシェア価格の上昇にもかかわらず逃れられない。

Simply Wall St ·  11/30 07:59

FibroGen, Inc. (NASDAQ:FGEN) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 34% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 32% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, FibroGen may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 10.3x and even P/S higher than 64x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How FibroGen Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, FibroGen has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think FibroGen's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For FibroGen?

FibroGen's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 16% gain to the company's top line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 37% drop in revenue in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 12% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 101%, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that FibroGen is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price move, FibroGen's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It's clear to see that FibroGen maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, FibroGen's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
