Japanese stocks with american depositary receipts, compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (1 dollar equals 149.59 yen), rose for companies such as Denso, Disco, komatsu, SMC, and Mizuho Financial Group, while stocks like Japan Post Bank, Japan Post, Nidec, Seven & I Holdings, MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, and nintendo co ltd fell, leading to a mixed overall performance. The US stock market rebounded. The Dow average rose by 188.59 dollars to 44,910.65 dollars, and the nasdaq closed up 157.69 points at 19,218.17. Following the presidential election, the small business confidence index increased, and it became clear that the incoming President Trump had a constructive dialogue over tariffs with leaders of Canada and Mexico, easing concerns and improving investor sentiment which drove buying after opening and led to a rally. Optimism about retail sales reaching record levels due to discount sales by retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and expectations for the year-end sales season also contributed to buying in the retail sector, lifting the overall market. The decline in long-term interest rates was well received, leading to strength in tech stocks. The Dow updated its all-time high and closed higher.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 29th, the dollar-yen exchange rate rose to 150.53 yen and then fell to 149.47 yen, closing at 149.61 yen. Following a strong preference for risk that triggered yen selling, the acceleration of Tokyo's consumer price index in November, along with comments from Governor Ueda regarding correcting the weak yen, strengthened expectations for an early additional rate hike by the Bank of Japan, accelerating yen buying. The euro-dollar fell to 1.0542 dollars, then rose to 1.0581 dollars, and closed at 1.0580 dollars.
On the 29th, the NY crude oil futures for January were slightly lower (nymex crude oil January contract close: 68.00, down 0.72).
