Summary of the start of the afternoon session

In the afternoon, the Nikkei average started at a level similar to the previous day's close of 39180.06 yen, with an increase of 683.63 yen to 39196.65 yen. The Nikkei 225 futures during lunchtime were trading in the range of 39120 yen to 39220 yen. The dollar-yen exchange rate has been around 149.90-150.00 yen since around 9 a.m., slightly weaker yen and stronger dollar levels. In the Asian market, while the Shanghai Composite Index has seen a slight increase of about 0.1% in a back and forth movement around the previous day's closing price, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong started slightly higher but turned downwards to drop by about 0.1%.

The afternoon Nikkei average started at a level similar to the previous close. The market seems to be reassured by the easing of the movement towards a stronger yen and weaker dollar that temporarily reached 1 dollar = 149.00 yen early this morning. On the other hand, given the Nikkei's rise of over 300 yen yesterday, some are cautious about the rapid pace of the current increase and hesitant to chase higher prices.

In the sectors, marine transportation, nonferrous metals, and wholesale trade are among the top gainers, while electric and gas utilities, air transportation, and mining are declining.

Among the top trading values in the Tokyo Stock Exchange's main board market, companies like Monex Group <8698>, Furukawa Electric <5801>, Disco <6146>, Laser Tech <6920>, Kawasaki Heavy <7012>, Kawasaki Kisen <9107>, Screen HD <7735>, Fujikura <5803>, Tohden <8035>, and Sanrio <8136> are trading high. On the other hand, Kansai Electric <9503>, Asics <7936>, Sosei Group <6526>, SHIFT <3697>, and Seven & i HD <3382> are in decline.
