After Leaping 26% Shift4 Payments, Inc. (NYSE:FOUR) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 4 18:49

Despite an already strong run, Shift4 Payments, Inc. (NYSE:FOUR) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 72%.

Following the firm bounce in price, Shift4 Payments may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 63.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 19x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Shift4 Payments certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Shift4 Payments' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 8.7% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all in aggregate from three years ago, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 68% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 15%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Shift4 Payments is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Shift4 Payments' P/E?

Shift4 Payments' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Shift4 Payments maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Shift4 Payments (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
