On the evening of December 6, Beijing time, several informed sources said that OpenAI is considering abandoning a constraint on general artificial intelligence (AGI) to pave the way for future massive investments from Microsoft and other investors.

According to the current terms, when OpenAI achieves AGI, Microsoft will not be able to access this technology, which was originally intended to ensure that Microsoft would never misuse the technology. However, this constraint has become a stumbling block for both parties to deepen their cooperation.

Now, multiple informed sources have revealed that OpenAI is considering removing this provision from its corporate structure, allowing it to continue receiving investments from Microsoft after AGI is achieved. These sources also pointed out that the OpenAI board of directors is discussing various options and has not yet made a final decision.

The clause is intended to protect potentially powerful technology from being misused for commercial purposes, granting ownership of the technology to its nonprofit committee. OpenAI states on its website: "AGI is explicitly excluded from all commercial and intellectual property licensing agreements."

However, this clause could limit the value of its cooperation with Microsoft and may inhibit further investments from Microsoft. Currently, Microsoft has injected more than $13 billion into OpenAI.

Given the staggering costs involved in developing advanced AI models in competition with financially strong rivals like Google and Amazon, OpenAI will need more funding.

Led by Sam Altman, OpenAI's recent valuation reached $150 billion, and it is currently restructuring into a for-profit company, diverging from its original nonprofit model.

Multiple informed sources stated that as part of these changes, OpenAI is discussing new terms with investors, including its largest shareholder microsoft.

Altman mentioned during a meeting on Wednesday at the new york times, "When we started, we had no idea we would become a product company or that the funding we needed would be so immense. If we had known this, we would have chosen a different structure."

Altman also added, "We stated that our intention is to view AGI as a milestone. We left ourselves some flexibility because we do not know what will happen." Additionally, as part of the restructuring, Altman may also directly acquire an equity stake in OpenAI for the first time.

OpenAI began raising external funds in 2019 and received a $1 billion investment from microsoft that year. OpenAI stated at the time that it planned to license pre-AGI technology to microsoft to cover the costs of developing advanced ai technology. OpenAI also suggested that supporters consider their investment in the spirit of donations, understanding that it might be difficult to know what role money would play in the post-AGI era.

However, its steady move toward becoming a for-profit entity has faced strong criticism from competitors, including OpenAI's early supporter and co-founder Elon Musk. Musk later founded a rival startup, xAI, and recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and microsoft.

Informed sources also indicated that as part of the proposed restructuring, OpenAI will retain an independent non-profit entity that will hold shares in the new company and may own a reits. This non-profit organization will have access to research and technology but will focus solely on pursuing OpenAI's mission to benefit humanity.

OpenAI declined to comment on the specifics of the restructuring negotiations, but OpenAI board of directors chair Bret Taylor stated that the board of the non-profit organization "is focused on fulfilling our trustee obligations to ensure that the company can continue to advance its mission to ensure AGI benefits all humanity."

Altman also predicted during his speech at the new york times DealBook summit on Wednesday that the industry could start seeing the first cases of AGI as early as 2025. In these cases, you could give the AI system a very complex task, and it would use different tools to complete that task.

Ultraman also pointed out that the initial impact of AGI may be small. However, in the end, its influence will be "more intense than people imagine." He also added that with every major technological achievement, a large number of jobs will be replaced.
