B-SOFTLtd (SZSE:300451) Shareholders Are up 6.0% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 8, 2024 18:20

B-SOFT Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300451) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 68% in the last quarter. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. After all, the share price is down 40% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

The recent uptick of 6.0% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

B-SOFTLtd has made a profit in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

The modest 0.2% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 0.6% a year in the five year period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 12% in the last year, B-SOFTLtd shareholders lost 21% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 7% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
