Brinker International's (NYSE:EAT) Investors Will Be Pleased With Their Stellar 257% Return Over the Last Three Years

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 11 09:19

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But in contrast you can make much more than 100% if the company does well. For example, the Brinker International, Inc. (NYSE:EAT) share price has soared 257% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that. It's also good to see the share price up 81% over the last quarter.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Brinker International achieved compound earnings per share growth of 13% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 53% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Brinker International shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 209% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 25% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Brinker International better, we need to consider many other factors.
