Positive Earnings Growth Hasn't Been Enough to Get Minth Group (HKG:425) Shareholders a Favorable Return Over the Last Three Years

ポジティブな収益成長は、敏実集団(HKG:425)株主に過去3年間で有利なリターンをもたらすには十分ではありませんでした。

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Minth Group Limited (HKG:425) share price has gained 10% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 59% in the last three years. So it's good to see it climbing back up. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

While the stock has risen 6.0% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Although the share price is down over three years, Minth Group actually managed to grow EPS by 2.6% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

It's pretty reasonable to suspect the market was previously to bullish on the stock, and has since moderated expectations. However, taking a look at other business metrics might shed a bit more light on the share price action.

Revenue is actually up 17% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Minth Group more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on Minth Group

A Dividend Lost

The value of past dividends are accounted for in the total shareholder return (TSR), but not in the share price return mentioned above. Many would argue the TSR gives a more complete picture of the value a stock brings to its holders. Minth Group's TSR over the last 3 years is -56%; better than its share price return. Even though the company isn't paying dividends at the moment, it has done in the past.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Minth Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 8.5%, against a market gain of about 27%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 8% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize.
