The 29% Return Delivered to Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology's (SZSE:002947) Shareholders Actually Lagged YoY Earnings Growth

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you buy good businesses at attractive prices, your portfolio returns could exceed the average market return. For example, the Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002947) share price is up 24% in the last three years, clearly besting the market decline of around 18% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 17%, including dividends.

Since it's been a strong week for Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology achieved compound earnings per share growth of 338% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 8% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology, it has a TSR of 29% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 17% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 1.0% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Suzhou Hengmingda Electronic Technology (including 1 which is a bit unpleasant) .
