Metagenomi, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGX) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 89% after a shaky period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
Although its price has surged higher, Metagenomi may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 10.6x and even P/S higher than 62x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.
How Has Metagenomi Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Metagenomi as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Metagenomi's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 45% gain to the company's top line. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 28% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 118% per year, which paints a poor picture.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Metagenomi's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Shares in Metagenomi have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of Metagenomi's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
