Should You Be Adding Chubb (NYSE:CB) To Your Watchlist Today?

Simply Wall St ·  05:31

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Chubb (NYSE:CB). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Chubb with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is Chubb Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, Chubb has grown EPS by 7.8% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't anything to write home about, it does show the business is growing.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Chubb maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 13% to US$55b. That's a real positive.

Are Chubb Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Chubb has a market capitalisation of US$111b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$519m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.5% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.

Should You Add Chubb To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Chubb is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Chubb by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
