Wanda Film Holding (SZSE:002739) Shareholders Are up 7.8% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 15 08:04

It is doubtless a positive to see that the Wanda Film Holding Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002739) share price has gained some 50% in the last three months. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 25% in that half decade.

While the last five years has been tough for Wanda Film Holding shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Wanda Film Holding isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last half decade, Wanda Film Holding saw its revenue increase by 3.2% per year. That's far from impressive given all the money it is losing. Given this fairly low revenue growth (and lack of profits), it's not particularly surprising to see the stock down 5% (annualized) in the same time frame. Investors should consider how bad the losses are, and whether the company can make it to profitability with ease. It could be worth putting it on your watchlist and revisiting when it makes its maiden profit.

A Different Perspective

Wanda Film Holding shareholders gained a total return of 1.0% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 5% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around.
