Business Today ·  16:20

Malaysia and Thailand are committed to enhancing bilateral trade and investment through the Joint Task Force on Trade and Investment, with a target of achieving US$30 billion by 2027.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that while the target seems ambitious, the promising economic potential of both Thailand and Malaysia makes it a goal worth striving for.

During a joint press conference with Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Anwar highlighted the need for increased focus and investment in Malaysia's northern region, similar to the requirements in southern Thailand.

Paetongtarn, who is on an official visit to Malaysia from Dec 15 – Dec 16, emphasised the potential for collaboration in the rubber and halal industries, which could bring mutual benefits to both nations. She reaffirmed her commitment to the US$30 billion trade target by 2027.

"In terms of economic cooperation, both countries will focus on efforts to trade and invest in border connectivity, the digital economy, and tourism," said Paetongtarn.

She added, "For border areas, we discussed the need to address flooding issues faced by both nations and will continue close collaboration to improve cross-border road and rail links to facilitate greater movement of trade goods and interaction between people. After the meeting, we witnessed the signing of two important MoUs on rubber cooperation and culture. I am confident this will strengthen the economy and people-to-people relations."

During the visit, Paetongtarn also witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on rubber cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand. The MoU was signed by Datuk Dr Zairossani Mohd Nor, Director-General of the Malaysian Rubber Board, and Sukatus Tarngwiriyakul, Acting Governor of the Rubber Authority of Thailand.
