The Shimadzu Science and Technology Promotion Foundation (Chairman Hiroyuki Sakaki) has announced that at the board of directors meeting held on December 6, one recipient of the 2024 Shimadzu Award, three recipients of the Shimadzu Encouragement Award, and 20 recipients of research and development grants (20 in general areas and 3 in new fields) have been decided.
The foundation was established in 1980 with the contribution funds from Shimadzu Corporation to promote and assist research and development in science and technology, and it transitioned to a public foundation in April 2012. The basic assets total approximately 3 billion yen.
The Shimadzu Award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of science and technology, particularly related to scientific measurement, through basic research and applied practical research.
The Shimadzu Encouragement Award is a commendation program established in the fiscal year 2018 that recognizes researchers under the age of 45 who have produced original results in basic research and applied practical research in the field of science and technology, particularly related to scientific measurement, and whose research development is expected.
Research and development grants target innovative research in the fields of science and technology related primarily to scientific measurement and new fields, aimed at researchers under the age of 45 belonging to domestic research institutions. The foundation refers to the field of "science and technology related primarily to scientific measurement" as [general scope]. Additionally, [new fields] are designated annually by the foundation, and this year's theme for recruitment was "research fields in advanced information technology or research fields aiming to solve scientific issues using advanced information technology or data science."
This year, a total of 23 projects have been selected: 20 in the general scope and 3 in the new fields. All selected research pertains to cutting-edge technology, and its results and developments are anticipated in the future.
