The US stock market was mixed. The Dow average closed at $43,717.48, down $110.58, while the Nasdaq ended up 247.17 points at $20,173.89.
After the opening, there was a slight increase due to expectations of additional rate cuts at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting mid-week. The December services PMI indicated a high level not seen in nearly three years and an accelerating pace of expansion, which boosted the increase; however, the Dow average continued to decline, with the upside heavy and down slightly. On the other hand, the Nasdaq, driven by the rise of Apple, Google's parent company Alphabet, and Semiconductors Broadcom, performed steadily and reached a new all-time high. By sector, notable rises were seen in Auto Manufacturers and Auto Parts, along with increases in Broadcasting, Entertainment, and Retail, while Property Service and Telecommunication Services saw declines.
The technology company Honeywell International Inc (HON) announced that it is considering a separation of its aerospace business, which was well received leading to a rise in its stock. Semiconductor company Broadcom (AVGO) continued to see buying interest due to its quarterly results announced last weekend, with its peer Micron Technology Inc (MU) also rising on expectations ahead of its forthcoming quarterly earnings report. Luxury fashion brand Capri Holdings Ltd (CPRI) rose after reports that it is exploring the sale of its subsidiary brands Versace and Jimmy Choo.
Auto manufacturer Ford (F) was sold off due to a downgrade in investment judgment. Server manufacturer Super Micro Computer Inc (SMCI) fell. Bloomberg reported that it is seeking to strengthen its financial foundation by engaging Evercore for fundraising efforts.
Semiconductor giant NVIDIA (NVDA) continued to decline, entering a consolidation phase. In December, the stock price fell by 4.5%, and from the peak it hit in November, it has dropped by 11%, exceeding the 10% threshold that indicates a consolidation phase. NVIDIA has risen by 166% year-to-date.
