Even After Rising 8.4% This Past Week, Shanghai GuijiuLtd (SHSE:600696) Shareholders Are Still Down 55% Over the Past Three Years

Shanghai Guijiu Co.,Ltd (SHSE:600696) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 207% in the last quarter. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 55% in the last three years. So it is really good to see an improvement. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Shanghai GuijiuLtd saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 12% in the last year, Shanghai GuijiuLtd shareholders lost 6.8%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
