Honda Motor stated on Wednesday that the company's goal is to double its Global hybrid automobile sales by 2030 from the 2023 level.

Zhitong Finance learned that Honda Motor (HMC.US) stated on Wednesday that the company's goal is to double its Global hybrid automobile sales by 2030 from the 2023 level to 1.3 million units annually, providing a "bridge" for the popularization of fully electric vehicles. The company stated that starting in 2026, Honda will begin installing new, more fuel-efficient hybrid systems for compact and mid-sized models, and will transform its engine, platform, and control technologies.

Amidst the slowdown in electric vehicle expansion, the demand for hybrid vehicles is increasing, especially in Honda's best-selling North American market. Reports indicate that as President Trump plans to cut support for electric vehicles, they are facing a harsher environment in the USA.

While Honda's goal is to increase electric vehicle production to over 2 million units by 2030 and sell only electric and Fuel Cell Energy vehicles by 2040, the objective is to prioritize hybrid vehicles as a key focus for the USA market, a move similar to that of competitor Toyota (TM.US).

Honda Motor's Chief Operating Officer Katsuto Hayashi stated at a media briefing: "Before the full-scale popularization of electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles will play a bridging role. Perhaps when you think of hybrid vehicles, you think of Toyota's Prius, but I believe we can change the game." He added that Honda has no plans to modify its development and investment strategy based on Trump's policies.

The company stated that by using more shared components across models, Honda will reduce costs after 2027 and double the gross profit per hybrid vehicle produced at its US manufacturing base.

Honda did not disclose specific fuel efficiency targets, but its automobile development center chief Koji Ninomiya stated that the company's goal is to reach a level that is "comparable to or better than" the best hybrid competitors.

The company stated that in the China market, foreign brands are struggling to cope with the competition from domestic electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD. Honda is focusing on electric vehicles but will also launch the next generation of hybrid vehicles. Honda indicated that the hybrid vehicle sales target for 2030 does not include the China market.
