Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Globus Maritime Limited's (NASDAQ:GLBS) 27% Price Drop

Simply Wall St ·  04:28

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Globus Maritime Limited (NASDAQ:GLBS) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 60% share price decline.

Even after such a large drop in price, Globus Maritime may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.1x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 35x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Globus Maritime certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Globus Maritime's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Globus Maritime's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 61%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 26% drop in EPS in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 116% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15%.

With this information, we are not surprised that Globus Maritime is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Globus Maritime's P/E

Globus Maritime's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Globus Maritime maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Globus Maritime (1 is concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you might also be able to find a better stock than Globus Maritime. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
