When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten share price has climbed 71% in five years, easily topping the market return of 15% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 29% in the last year, including dividends.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 6.6%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last half decade, Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten share price is up 3.0% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 11% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 1.0% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten, it has a TSR of 78% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 12% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten you should know about.
