Kawasaki Kisen Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “our company”) supplied marine biofuel to the dedicated automobile ship “VIKING OCEAN” operated by our group at the finished car terminal “Yokohama Port Daikoku C-4 Terminal” on Monday, December 9. This is our first initiative to supply biofuel to ships operated by our company within Japan.

Biofuel is an alternative fuel that can reduce environmental load, and can be used without changing the specifications of existing diesel engines on ships. FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) contained in this biofuel is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 84% over the entire life cycle (from cultivation of raw materials to final fuel use) compared to conventional fossil fuels.
This time, by using “B24,” which contains 24% FAME mixed with low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), a CO2 reduction effect of approximately 190 tons is expected in the voyage of the main ship “VIKING OCEAN”.
Furthermore, the biofuel used this time is made from renewable organic resources such as biomass, which avoids the use of raw materials that compete with food and feed.

In our long-term environmental policy “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 - Connecting the Blue Sea to Tomorrow” (Note 1), we have set a target of “50% improvement” that exceeds the 2030 target of “40% improvement in CO2 emissions efficiency compared to 2008” set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and furthermore, we have set a goal of challenging net zero GHG emissions as a goal for 2050. As part of this action plan, we will continue to work on introducing alternative fuels that can reduce environmental impact and take on the challenge of achieving our goals.

(Note 1) “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 ~Connecting the Blue Sea to Tomorrow~”
As an action plan to reduce GHG, we have set out the introduction of zero-emission fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen fuel, and carbon-neutral fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic fuels.
