Simply Wall St ·  Dec 19 18:12

Potential Ouster, Inc. (NYSE:OUST) shareholders may wish to note that the Co-Founder, Charles Pacala, recently bought US$499k worth of stock, paying US$9.79 for each share. Although the purchase only increased their holding by 7.1%, it is still a solid purchase in our view.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ouster

In fact, the recent purchase by Charles Pacala was the biggest purchase of Ouster shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$10.38. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 118.00k shares worth US$1.2m. But insiders sold 98.99k shares worth US$877k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Ouster insiders. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Ouster insiders own about US$28m worth of shares. That equates to 5.2% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Do The Ouster Insider Transactions Indicate?

It is good to see recent purchasing. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Insiders likely see value in Ouster shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company). While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example - Ouster has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
