Naxos Records sues Kuke Music.
According to media reports, China's classical music platform Kuke Music (KUKE.US) signed an eight-year agreement with Naxos Records in 2018, allowing it to access a large catalog of classical music recordings. However, Naxos claims that Kuke stopped making payments under the agreement at the end of 2021 and owes nearly 2 million dollars, leading to the lawsuit.
It is reported that in the lawsuit filed in the Tennessee court, Naxos explained that in 2018, it signed an eight-year digital distribution agreement with Kuke, which allowed this Chinese company "to access certain Naxos digital music services and content" and permitted it to provide and distribute recordings released by the Naxos Group within China. Subsequently, Kuke would share the revenue generated from its activities in China with Naxos. Initially, everything went smoothly, and Kuke made monthly payments according to the requirements of the digital distribution agreement until November 2021. Later, Kuke began to default on the payments stipulated in the agreement.
The lawsuit states that as of last week, Kuke has not paid the majority of the amounts owed to Naxos since December 1, 2021, according to the digital distribution agreement and/or payment plan agreement. The current debt stands at 1,855,493.8925 dollars.
