57% Of This California Resources Insider's Holdings Were Sold

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 25 06:07

Insiders were net sellers of California Resources Corporation's (NYSE:CRC ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

California Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Non-Executive Director, Mark McFarland, sold US$8.5m worth of shares at a price of US$47.52 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$51.50. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 57% of Mark McFarland's holding. Mark McFarland was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.0m for 21.28k shares. But they sold 235.00k shares for US$11m. Mark McFarland sold a total of 235.00k shares over the year at an average price of US$47.26. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.5% of California Resources shares, worth about US$22m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
