The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that Telegram and Tencent's WeChat are in the process of securing licences to operate their platforms in Malaysia.

This move follows the introduction of licensing requirements, effective Jan 1, 2025, aimed at enhancing online safety, user protection, and regulatory oversight for internet messaging and social media platforms.

MCMC commended both platforms for their commitment to compliance and stated that they are expected to fulfil the necessary requirements soon.

The framework emphasises creating a safer online environment, particularly for children and vulnerable groups, while offering Malaysians improved user experiences and better protection against harmful content.

MCMC has reminded all service providers to submit their applications before the Dec 31, 2024 deadline to avoid regulatory action. The commission is ready to assist service providers to ensure a seamless application process.
