The US stock market was mixed. The Dow average was up 28.77 dollars at 43,325.80 dollars, while the Nasdaq ended trading down 10.77 points at 20,020.36.
Due to an unexpected decrease in unemployment insurance claims, there was selling driven by aversion to rising long-term interest rates, leading to a decline after the opening. Amid a lack of momentum after the Christmas holiday, persistent buying expectations for a Christmas rally toward year-end supported the lower prices. Later, as the number of continuing unemployment insurance recipients reached a three-year high and the strong results of the seven-year bond auction caused interest rates to turn lower, buying strengthened toward the end, allowing the Dow to barely recover into positive territory. The Nasdaq, however, could not sustain the buying and ended mixed. By sector, Property Service and Semiconductors and related manufacturing rose, while Automobiles and Auto Manufacturers fell.
The coffee chain Starbucks (SBUX) saw its stock rise as the labor union of baristas ended a five-day strike. Apple (AAPL) also rose as analysts raised its target price. Boeing (BA), the aircraft manufacturer, saw an increase in stock price as well, with the CEO of an electric vehicle manufacturer, Mr. Mask, who will lead Trump's upcoming government efficiency department (DOGE), showing an optimistic outlook on the company's performance, suggesting that the new CEO would lead it on a better path.
The managed healthcare company UnitedHealth Group Inc (UNH) saw an increase as analysts raised their investment ratings, indicating the stock price is historically very attractive. The game retailer GameStop (GME) was bought following a post on social media by Mr. Keith Gill, known as the mastermind behind the meme stock boom. The enterprise analytics software company MicroStrategy (MSTR), which has a high percentage of Bitcoin holdings, was sold as Bitcoin prices declined.
Russia reportedly rejected Trump's call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine but showed a readiness to engage in negotiations towards a long-term peace agreement.
