As of the market close on the 30th, the number of advancing and declining stocks in the Nikkei Average was 60 stocks up, 164 stocks down, and 1 stock unchanged.
Last Friday, the Dow Inc closed down by 333.59 points at 42,992.21, and Nasdaq closed down by 298.33 points at 19,722.03. With the year-end and New Year holidays approaching, participant numbers are limited, while indicators from China were dull, and political instability in Germany and South Korea seemed to affect some investor sentiment, contributing to the decline. Ahead of rebalancing for the new fiscal year, especially high-tech stocks were sold off, further pushing down the overall market, which remained weak throughout the day. However, toward the end of the day, the market loss narrowed. The Nikkei Average started the year-end trading session at 40,325.78 yen, up 44.62 yen compared to the previous weekend, marking four consecutive days of gains. Although buying initially led the market, as expected, profit-taking sales appeared in the form of a reaction to the significant rise from the previous weekend, switching to a negative zone after morning buying activity subsided. Selling observed was seen as position adjustments, and the Nikkei Average ended the year-end trading below the 40,000 yen mark.
The Nikkei Average at market close was down 386.62 points (-0.96%) at 39,894.54. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board was 1.6 billion shares, with a trading value of 3 trillion601.1 billion yen. By industry, sectors such as services, nonferrous metals, electric appliances, precision instruments, and transportation equipment fell, while marine shipping, iron & steel, mining, rubber products, and fisheries & agriculture increased.
