Insiders At Louisiana-Pacific Sold US$3.6m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 1 19:53

Many Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (NYSE:LPX) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Louisiana-Pacific

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chairman & CEO, William Southern, for US$3.0m worth of shares, at about US$93.44 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$104). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 5.7% of William Southern's holding.

Louisiana-Pacific insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Louisiana-Pacific Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last three months saw some Louisiana-Pacific insider selling. Independent Director Ozey Horton sold just US$34k worth of shares in that time. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the amount sold isn't enough for us to put any weight on it.

Does Louisiana-Pacific Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Louisiana-Pacific insiders own 1.4% of the company, worth about US$102m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Louisiana-Pacific Tell Us?

We did not see any insider buying in the last three months, but we did see selling. But the sales were small, so we're not concerned. While we feel good about high insider ownership of Louisiana-Pacific, we can't say the same about the selling of shares.
