Here's Why WEX (NYSE:WEX) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 1 21:44

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like WEX (NYSE:WEX). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

WEX's Improving Profits

WEX has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. To the delight of shareholders, WEX's EPS soared from US$6.26 to US$8.31, over the last year. That's a fantastic gain of 33%.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. It's noted that WEX's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. WEX maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 6.1% to US$2.7b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for WEX.

Are WEX Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since WEX has a market capitalisation of US$6.8b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. To be specific, they have US$46m worth of shares. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. Even though that's only about 0.7% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

Should You Add WEX To Your Watchlist?

If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into WEX's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in WEX's continuing strength. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. Now, you could try to make up your mind on WEX by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features.
