According to Malaysia's Internet Plus-Related regulatory Institutions, Elon Musk's social media platform X, as well as Google's video streaming platform YouTube, have not yet applied for a Social Media operation license.

According to Malaysia's Internet regulatory agency, the newly effective Malaysian law on Wednesday states that the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, and Google (GOOGL.US), which operates the video streaming platform YouTube, have not yet applied for a social media operation license.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that X claims its number of users in Malaysia has not reached the 8 million threshold required to obtain a license. The commission is working to verify the platform's claims.

Meanwhile, Google is negotiating with MCMC to address concerns about the video sharing functionality and licensing classification of its platform. The commission stated that it discussed the raised issues and will ensure that YouTube and related platforms understand their responsibilities.

MCMC also stated that WeChat and TikTok, owned by ByteDance, have signed new rules leading over other technology giants, and Telegram is in the final stages of the process.

In July last year, MCMC announced that any social media platform with over 8 million users in Malaysia must obtain an operating license in the country by January 1, 2025. This initiative aims to further regulate the operation of social media platforms and protect user rights and Cybersecurity. This is also part of Malaysia's authorities holding large technology companies accountable for illegal content. MCMC stated that platforms that violate licensing requirements may be subject to investigation or oversight.
