Constellation Energy has secured a contract worth 1 billion dollars to supply Nuclear Power to the USA government over the next ten years.

According to the Zhito Finance APP, Constellation Energy (CEG.US) announced on Thursday that it has secured a contract worth 1 billion USD to supply nuclear power to the USA government over the next ten years. This record contract marks one of the largest energy procurements in the history of the USA General Services Administration and is one of the first major energy agreements focused on climate that covers existing nuclear reactor power.

Under the agreement, Constellation will deliver electricity to more than 13 federal agencies, with total generation expected to exceed 10 million megawatt-hours over the ten-year period, enough to power more than a million households each year starting from April 25.

The procurement will cover 80 federal facilities on the PJM Interconnection network, including the USA Department of Transportation, the Federal Reserve Board, and the USA Army Corps of Engineers. The PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission operator serving a population of over 65 million.

Previously, the nuclear power industry had shrunk due to safety costs and radioactive waste management issues, but with technology companies and government agencies seeking carbon-free electricity to meet energy demands, the industry received renewed attention last year.

Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez stated that this agreement reflects the trend of change in the industry and allows the company to extend the licenses of nuclear power plants, invest in new equipment and technology, and is expected to increase power generation by approximately 135 megawatts.

The USA General Services Administration emphasized that these contracts will provide budget stability for federal agencies, keeping electricity costs unchanged over the next ten years to address price uncertainty and the increasing electricity demand from datacenters and AI facilities.

The director of the institution, Robin Carnahan, stated that the agreement demonstrates the collaboration between the federal government and corporate clean energy buyers to promote new nuclear energy capacity and ensure a reliable, affordable supply of clean energy.

It is worth mentioning that in the aforementioned contracts, $0.84 billion is allocated for Electrical Utilities supply, and $0.172 billion is allocated for energy efficiency work, including weatherproofing of federal buildings and the expansion of Led & Optoelectronics lighting. Additionally, four buildings in the capital will transition from a steam-powered system to electric boilers and heat pumps to improve energy efficiency.
