Apple (AAPL.US) agreed to pay $95 million in cash to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that Apple's voice assistant Siri infringes on users' privacy.

The Zhitong Finance App learned that Apple (AAPL.US) agreed to pay 95 million dollars in cash to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that Apple's voice assistant Siri infringes on users' privacy.

On Tuesday evening, Apple submitted a preliminary settlement agreement to the federal court in Oakland, California, which requires approval from US District Judge Jeffrey White.

Mobile device users complain that Apple often records their private conversations after they inadvertently activate Siri and divulges these conversations to third parties such as advertisers.

Voice assistants usually respond when people use “hot words” such as “Hi, Siri.”

The lawsuit period is September 17, 2014 to December 31, 2024. The lawsuit began when Siri added a “Hi, Siri” feature which allegedly led to unauthorized recordings.

The class-action lawsuit is expected to involve tens of millions of people, and the plaintiffs could receive up to $20 in compensation from every Siri-enabled device such as the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple denied wrongdoing when agreeing to the settlement.

The $95 million compensation is equivalent to nine hours of Apple's profit. The company's net profit for the previous fiscal year was $93.74 billion.
