By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. Just take a look at Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598), which is up 51%, over three years, soundly beating the market decline of 22% (not including dividends).

In light of the stock dropping 7.9% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Inly Media moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.

A Different Perspective

Inly Media shareholders are down 16% for the year, but the market itself is up 7.2%. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Inly Media has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are potentially serious) we think you should know about.
