[Afternoon Market Overview]
In the afternoon session, the Nikkei Average opened at 39606.86 yen, down 374.20 yen from the previous day, widening the decline from the morning close (39678.93 yen). During lunch, the Nikkei 225 Futures traded weakly in the range of 39550 yen-39670 yen. The USD/JPY pair was at 1 dollar = 157.90-158.00 yen, reflecting a stronger yen and weaker dollar by about 30 sen since around 9 AM. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite Index is fluctuating in negative territory, down about 0.3%, while the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index is generally in positive territory but has a heavy upper trend, rising about 0.2%.
In the afternoon session of the Tokyo market, selling started slightly ahead compared to the morning close. There are no particularly notable buying factors in the domestic market, and active buying seems to be limited. On the other hand, the Dow Jones futures, which were weak in the morning, are showing solid support on the downside, providing some reassurance in the Tokyo market.
In the Sector, the Marine Transportation, Transportation Equipment, and Wholesale Trade sectors had the highest declines, while Other Products, Pharmaceuticals, and Food Products showed gains. In terms of major trading volumes on the Tokyo Main Board, Sazerya <7581>, Kawasaki Heavy Industries <9107>, Lasertec <6920>, Nippon Yusen <9101>, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines <9104>, Sakura <3778>, Nissan Motor <7201>, TOWA <6315>, Mitsui & Co. <8031>, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries <7012> declined. On the other hand, ASICS <7936>, Sanrio <8136>, NINTENDO CO LTD <7974>, Rakuten <4755>, SHIFT <3697>, JT <2914>, and DISCO <6146> increased.
