[Afternoon Market Overview]

In the later session, the Nikkei Average has started at 39309.91 yen, down 295.18 yen from the previous day, expanding the decline from the mid-session (39411.76 yen). During lunch time, the Nikkei 225 futures are weak, ranging from 39270 yen to 39370 yen. The dollar-yen is at 1 dollar = 158.20-30 yen, showing about a 20 sen appreciation of the dollar since around 9 a.m. In Asia's market, while the Shanghai Composite Index is fluctuating around the previous day's closing price with a decline of about 0.2%, the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index is moving around the previous day's closing price with a decline of about 0.2%.

In the later session, the Tokyo market started slightly with selling leading compared to the mid-session. Since the Tokyo market is entering a three-day holiday starting tomorrow, and with the USA's December employment statistics being announced tonight, it seems that aggressive buying is being restrained as participants want to assess these factors. On the other hand, although the Nikkei Average in the earlier session was down 193 yen, Fast Retailing <9983> has pushed it down by about 300 yen, indicating that the overall market is not perceived as weak.

In the sector, Marine Transportation, Bank, and Pharmaceutical are among the highest declines, while Metal Products, Nonferrous Metals, and Other Products are among the highest increases.

In the top trading value of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board market, Fast Retailing, Chugai Pharmaceutical <4519>, Rakuten Group <4755>, Mitsui E&S <7003>, Hitachi <6501>, Mitsui Sumitomo <8316>, Mizuho <8411>, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines <9104>, TDK <6762>, and Kawasaki Kisen <9107> are declining.
