Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As Hangjin Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000818) Shares Dive 29%

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 24 06:19

Hangjin Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000818) shares have had a horrible month, losing 29% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 45% share price drop.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Hangjin Technology's P/S ratio of 2.3x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Chemicals industry in China is also close to 2.2x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Hangjin Technology Performed Recently?

Revenue has risen firmly for Hangjin Technology recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Hangjin Technology's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Hangjin Technology?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Hangjin Technology's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's top line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 4.8% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 24% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Hangjin Technology's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Final Word

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Hangjin Technology looks to be in line with the rest of the Chemicals industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our look at Hangjin Technology revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
