As of the closing time 31 days ago, the number of rising and falling stocks in the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 65 rising, 156 falling, and 4 unchanged.
The Nikkei Average has risen for three consecutive days. It ended the morning trading at 39,540.37 yen, up 26.40 yen (+0.07%) compared to the previous day (estimated Volume of 0.8 billion 50 million shares).
On the 30th, the U.S. stock market rebounded. The Dow Inc rose by 168.61 dollars to 44,882.13 dollars, and the Nasdaq finished trading up 49.43 points at 19,681.75. Although the GDP for the October-December quarter fell below expectations, the unexpected expansion in consumption spread an optimistic view of the economy, leading to increases after the market opened. The decline in long-term interest rates, along with the rise of Tesla and Meta Platforms Inc, further boosted the market. Although the market remained strong throughout the day, the gains narrowed in the latter part of the day after President Trump reiterated his plan to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada.
Taking cues from the rebound in U.S. stocks, the Tokyo market started trading firmly. The Nikkei Average began trading above the previous day's close, but attention shifted to companies related to Earnings Reports, leading to minor fluctuations in the Index ETF. The continued closure of Asian stock markets due to the Lunar New Year also impacted trading, with fluctuations remaining under 200 yen, maintaining levels near the previous day’s closing price.
Among the Nikkei Average constituent stocks, NEC surged due to significantly better-than-expected operating profit in the third quarter. Positive reports from securities firms also boosted shares of Chugai Pharmaceutical and Nomura Research Institute. Additionally, shares in Semiconductors, including Tokyo Electron Ltd. Unsponsored ADR and Lasertech, rose. Other stocks such as Hitachi, Fujikura, Toto, Sumitomo Pharma, and IHI were also bought up.
On the other hand, negative reports from securities firms led to selling in Hino Motors, as well as declines in other private railway stocks like Tobu Railway, Odakyu Electric Railway, Keio Electric Railway, and Keisei Electric Railway. Additionally, Terumo, Sumitomo Realty & Development, SHARP CORP, Yamato Holdings, and Bridgestone Corporation Unsponsored ADR were sold off.
By global sector, Nonferrous Metals, Electric Appliances, Marine Shipping, Metal Products, and Pharmaceutical industries increased, while A-REIT ETF, Precision Instruments, Rubber Products, Land Transportation, and Services fell.
The top contributor to the rise was Tokyo Electron Ltd. Unsponsored ADR <8035>, which raised the Nikkei average by about 81 yen. The second was Chugai Pharmaceutical <4519>, followed by Fast Retailing <9983>, SoftBank Group <9984>, NRI <4307>, Fujikura <5803>, NEC <6701>, etc.
On the other hand, the biggest contributor to the decline was Terumo <4543>, which pushed down the Nikkei average by about 27 yen with just one stock. The second place was TDK <6762>, followed by Kddi Corporation <9433>, Advantest <6857>, Oriental Land Co., Ltd. Unsponsored ADR <4661>, Sumitomo Realty & Development <8830>, NINTENDO CO LTD <7974>, among others.
