Markets closed down on this final January trading day.

Around 2:00 p.m. ET, the White House press secretary said on Saturday tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico and China will begin. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The president will be implementing tomorrow 25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada and a 10% tariff on China."

Markets went south and at 4:01 p.m. ET, the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ was preliminarily off 337  (-0.75%). The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ was down 30  (-0.51%) and  the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ closed down 54 (-0.28%).

Bitcoin traded below $103,000 and gold snapped its record-setting streak but with its 7% January rise, this represents its best month (in dollar terms) since August 2011.

More earnings will come out next week, with $Clorox (CLX.US)$ and $Palantir (PLTR.US)$ reporting after the close on Monday, followed by $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ sharing earnings after Tuesday's close.
