Original title: the German auto market is still in the doldrums. The number of new car registrations is lower than in previous years.

According to the latest data released by the German Federal Motor Transport Agency on June 3 local time, although the country's car market is slowly recovering, it is still in the doldrums compared with the pre-epidemic level. However, the proportion of new cars registered with electric vehicles continues to increase.

Figures show that in May this year, the number of newly registered cars in Germany was only 230635. Although it still increased by about 37% compared with May 2020. But at that time, the automobile industry was badly hit by the epidemic, dealers were forced to close down, production was also subject to many restrictions, and sales fell sharply. About 1.1 million cars have been registered in Germany since the beginning of this year, an increase of nearly 13% compared with the same period last year.

In response, Reinhard Zipper, president of the German International Association of Automobile Manufacturers, said that even if there is a high growth rate again, it cannot conceal the fact that the car market is still depressed. "since the beginning of this year, the number of new car registrations has been 16% lower than the previous average," he said. " In view of the recent steady decline in infection rates in Germany, Zipper called for the lifting of epidemic prevention restrictions on car dealers nationwide.

According to the German Association of Automobile Manufacturers, production is also in the doldrums. In May, Germany produced about 250100 cars, an increase of 58% compared with May last year-but still well below pre-crisis levels.

In contrast, the development momentum of new energy vehicles is gratifying, and their market share is further improved. According to the German Federal Motor Transport Agency, in May this year, a total of 26786 new pure electric vehicles were registered on the road, almost four times the number in the same period last year, accounting for 11.6% of the total newly registered vehicles. The SUV, which has long been controversial over emissions and environmental protection, remains popular, accounting for 23% of newly registered vehicles in May. (front desk reporter Ruan Jiawen)
