Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung Group, is considering building a battery factory in central Illinois, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin revealed on Thursday.
Samsung SDI is discussing building a battery factory in Normal, Illinois, Durbin said. AmazonRivian, an electric car start-up backed by Ford and Ford, currently has a factory in Normal and said in April that Samsung SDI would provide batteries for its cars.
"We are competing for a large battery factory at Samsung," Durbin said on Thursday. A delegation came from South Korea this week. I talked to them, and so did others. We hope that Samsung's factory will be located next door to Rivian. This decision has not been made yet. Owning the battery factory will also create thousands of jobs. "
It follows reports that Samsung SDI has been in talks with electric car makers, including Stellantis and Rivian, to supply batteries produced at potential factories in the US. Samsung is considering investing at least Won3,000bn ($2.62 billion) to produce batteries for Stellantis and at least Won1tn to produce batteries for Rivian, according to sources.
