Daimler CEO: automakers may face chip shortages by 2023

According to media reports, Ola Kaellenius, chief executive of German carmaker Daimler, said on Sunday that the surge in demand for semiconductor chips means it may be difficult for the car industry to procure enough semiconductor chips from next year to 2023, but then the supply shortage should not be so severe.

Carmakers, most of which were forced to close their factories last year as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, faced fierce competition from the huge consumer electronics industry in chip delivery and were hit by a series of supply chain disruptions during the outbreak.

At the same time, cars are increasingly dependent on chips-from engine computer management to improve fuel economy to driver assistance functions such as emergency braking.

"several chip suppliers have mentioned the structural problems of demand," Ola K ä llenius told reporters at a round table ahead of the Munich IAA auto show. "this could affect 2022, and it could be looser by 2023."

Daimler said last week that it expected sales at its Mercedes subsidiary to fall sharply in the third quarter because of global semiconductor shortages, becoming the latest carmaker to suffer a revenue hit. Due to the shortage of chips, General Motors Co from the United StatesCarmakers such as Mahindra in India and Toyota in Japan have cut production and sales forecasts.

In July, Daimler said it would spend more than 40 billion euros ($47.5 billion) in the all-electric vehicle market with Tesla, Inc. by 2030.It is up and down, but warns that technological changes will lead to layoffs.

Modern automobileEight battery factories will be built to increase production of electric vehicles (EV), and all new car platforms will produce only electric vehicles from 2025, it said.

K ä llenius said that the company's plan to spin off its truck subsidiary Daimler trucks by the end of 2021 was still under way.
