The Middle East giant United Arab Emirates announced on Sunday that it would provide a package of benefits and subsidies totaling 24 billion dirhams ($6.5 billion) to encourage residents to work in the private sector and reduce unemployment, which has risen sharply as a result of the epidemic.

Like many Middle Eastern oil-producing countries, a government job is the first choice for job seekers in the United Arab Emirates, and many college graduates turn down offers from private companies, waiting for better government jobs in terms of salaries, benefits and working hours. At present, millions of foreigners from around the world fill most of the jobs in the private sector.

The measures announced by the UAE government on Sunday include a monthly allowance of at least 800 dirhams for each child of private sector workers, and up to four times the monthly allowance for those earning less than 20,000 dirhams a month. This will help narrow the gap between the public and private sectors, and the Government plans to recruit 75000 citizens to work in the private sector over the next five years.

Other incentives include paid training programmes, five years of extra income and bonuses for people in important occupations such as nursing and computer programming.

The unemployment rate in the United Arab Emirates rose to 5 per cent in 2020 from 2.2 per cent a year ago, affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, according to the latest estimates from the World Bank.
