The S & P 500 closed higher on Monday, ending a five-day decline as investors focused on a possible increase in corporate tax rates and upcoming economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial average also rose, but the NASDAQ closed lower. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 261.91 points, or 0.76%, at 34869.63; the s & p 500 closed up 10.15 points, or 0.23%, at 4468.73; and the Nasdaq index fell 9.91 points, or 0.07%, at 15105.58.
