The number of initial claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly for the third consecutive week to 351000 and is expected to be 330000, according to data released by the Labor Department on Thursday.

In the week ended September 18, the number of renewed claims for unemployment benefits fell to 2.802 million, compared with a previous value of 2.845 million and an expected 2.79 million.

The rise in initial jobless claims highlights the volatility of the weekly data, although it is still hovering near the lows of the epidemic.

In addition, the last time the number of initial jobless claims rose for three consecutive weeks was in April 2020, but the increase was even greater at that time.

Initial jobless claims in California rose by nearly 18000, the largest increase for the week, after an increase of more than 17000. Michigan and Texas also showed significant increases, though the increase was relatively small. After experiencing the biggest increase last week, Virginia suffered the biggest decline this week, followed by Maryland.

After the end of federal unemployment benefits, California says those who are still out of work or working fewer hours may be eligible for normal state unemployment benefits, which may help explain the continuous rise in applications in the state.

It is reported that federal epidemic unemployment benefits in all states ended on September 6. The White House also said it would not extend unemployment benefits further, but states could use the epidemic relief fund to provide additional assistance to unemployed workers.
